The Untouchables (1959): New York, middle of 1932. The Syndicate-- headed by Joe Kulak, Louis "Lepke" Buchalter and Dutch Schultz-- has the city's huge garment industry organized and under control. Now they are setting their sights on bakeries; there are 500 independent wholesale bakers in the city. They give Bull Hanlon the word: get the biggest independent baker, Adam Stone, to sign up and all the rest will fall in line. Hanlon is to use any means at his disposal. And so Eliot Ness and his Untouchables arrive in New York. Ness wants to fight fire with fire: just as the Syndicate is trying to force all the truck drivers to join their crooked United Bakers Trucking Association, Ness wants honest Adam Stone to organize all the independent bakers into a legit union. Mr. Stone wants no part of it, he is independent, and says he can fight the hoods on his own; he's been fighting to keep his business going for 30 years, just him and his business partner, his life-long friend Max Turkin. When Ness says they might try to hurt his family, Mr. Stone says his wife has been dead for 10 years; and he has disowned his daughter Marcia, he says she is "dead" as far as he is concerned. Meanwhile, his daughter Marcia is working as a hootchie-kootchie dancer at a carnival in Coney Island. Max Turkin visits her, she refers to him as "uncle" Max; he wants her to reconcile with her father-- but Marcia, like her dad, thinks it's too late for that. Later, the hoods wreck Stone's trucks and bomb his ovens. Lepke had ordered Hanlon not to kill Adam Stone, so as a warning Hanlon has Max rubbed out instead. October 3, 1932, they have funeral services for Max. Then Hanlon drops in on Marcia, and threatens her. Marcia sees her father for the first time in 5 years; since Stone doesn't want her to get killed like Max, he signs a contract with Hanlon. Ness talks to Marcia and says if she gives the signed contract to Hanlon, her father won't live long. When Hanlon drops in on Marcia again, she says her father didn't sign the contract; after Hanlon leaves, Marcia tears up the contract, and phones (dialing 7 numbers) her dad to warn him. Adam Stone confronts Hanlon at his place, they fight. As Stone is choking the living daylights out of Hanlon, one of Hanlon's boys shoots Stone in the left shoulder. Just then, Ness and Hobson and 2 cops barge in. In the shootout, Hanlon's hoods are shot. As for Bull Hanlon, Lepke had him taken care of-- next night, they fished Hanlon out of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. (synopsis by: kdh)
